Leslie J Burton Jr, MD, PhD
I was born on St Croix USVI where I matriculated in the local public educational system. My parents later relocated to Georgia secondary to local school overcrowding. Hence, I completed my high school education in the Georgia public school system. Even so, I was afforded the opportunity to attend Morehouse College where I attained the Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Biology. I later matriculated at Clark Atlanta University and earned the Doctorate of Philosophy (PhD) in Biochemistry. I obtained my Medical Doctorate (MD) at the University of Tennessee School of Medicine. I also completed residency in Family Medicine at the University of Tennessee.
Upon completing residency, I have been employed in Emergency Departments in Tennessee and St Croix, USVI. These settings have afforded me the opportunity to provide emergent care, urgent care, acute/ chronic care, and preventative care to the community at large. Additionally, I briefly served as the Medical Director for the Department of Corrections in St Croix, USVI.
Over the years, I’ve longed to permanently return home to the USVI. I have done so since 2011 and I’m committed to contributing to the betterment of this community’s healthcare. As the landscape of our healthcare system changes, I remain convinced that our community can thrive despite the challenges that lie before us. As such, I am committed to the effort of elevating the level of healthcare in our community.
